India to release AI regulation consultation paper within a month

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the time has come for AI regulation. He said MeitY will release a consultation paper within one month, centred on safety and covering harms such as deepfakes. He said industry must take the main responsibility for safety, cybersecurity and user harm. He also said government departments may buy AI through an empanelment of firms and startups instead of the usual tenders.

Why it matters: This moves India away from relying only on existing laws and voluntary codes. Companies that build or use AI in India, including startups, should watch for the paper and be ready to comment when it comes out.

PM Modi calls for clear labelling of AI-generated and deepfake content

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met GSMA board members in New Delhi before the India Mobile Congress. In a post on X he asked for clear identification of AI-generated content and for technology-led solutions to cyber fraud. Reports say he suggested ways for users to quickly identify where synthetic or deepfake content came from. He opened the 10th India Mobile Congress on 8 October and named AI, 6G and chips as priorities.

Why it matters: Together with the planned consultation paper, this points to future rules that may require AI-made photos, videos and text to carry labels. Platforms, advertisers and content creators in India may have to follow such rules.

TCS says its annual AI revenue has crossed $3 billion

Tata Consultancy Services reported results for the July–September quarter. Net profit was ₹13,884 crore on revenue of ₹73,188 crore. The company said annualised AI revenue topped $3 billion, more than 10% of total revenue. It added 4,258 employees, which took its headcount to 5,98,056.

Why it matters: India's largest IT company now earns a real share of its money from AI work. This shows where demand is going for Indian IT services and for the skills that IT workers will need.

Indian AI startups raised $438 million in July–September, up 265%

Inc42 reported that Indian AI startups raised $438 million across 35 deals in the July–September quarter, up 265% from a year earlier. AI led all sectors in startup funding for the quarter. Total startup funding in India was $2.2 billion across 210 deals. One investor told Inc42 that without a few large rounds, AI funding has not risen much.

Why it matters: More investment money is going to Indian AI companies than to any other sector. This may bring more locally built AI tools for Indian businesses and languages. A few large deals make up much of the total.

OpenAI rolls out GPT-6 to all ChatGPT users, with interactive answers

OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT with a feature it calls Intelligent UI. Answers can now include charts, maps, forms and small tools such as a savings calculator or bill-splitter. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna from the following day. OpenAI says GPT-6 is also better at saying when it does not have enough information to answer.

Why it matters: Free users in India get the new model too. Everyday tasks like budgeting, trip planning or comparing options can now produce usable tools inside the chat, not just text.

Anthropic releases Claude Haiku 5.5, a cheaper small model

Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5, the third model in its Claude 5.5 family in about a month. It is meant for tasks like sorting, summarising and pulling out information, and for customer support and voice assistants. For prompts under 100,000 tokens, the API costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Anthropic says that is 75% less than Haiku 4.5. It is also the first Haiku model with safeguards against a small set of high-risk cybersecurity requests.

Why it matters: Cheaper models lower the cost of AI chatbots, document handling and support tools. This helps Indian small businesses and startups that work on tight budgets.

Google launches a Gemini agent that carries out work tasks for businesses

Google Cloud announced a single Gemini agent that takes goals, plans the work and completes tasks using a company's tools and data. It connects to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and other systems, and can use other models, including Anthropic's Claude. The agent has its own work email account and keeps an audit trail of what it does. It is for business customers first. Google said consumers will get it later but gave no date.

Why it matters: Large software companies are moving from chatbots that answer questions to agents that do office work. Indian businesses on Google Workspace may be offered this, so they should set clear rules on what an agent is allowed to access.

OpenAI to add invisible watermarks to ChatGPT text in the EU

OpenAI said it will add an invisible watermark to text made by ChatGPT and Codex in the European Union to comply with the EU AI Act. The watermark changes word choices slightly in a pattern that a detector can find. It will roll out over the coming weeks in the EU only. API developers anywhere can switch it on for some models. OpenAI's tests show it gets weaker when text is edited, and a missing watermark does not prove a human wrote the text.

Why it matters: This shows how labelling rules for AI content can work in practice, at a time when India is also discussing labels for AI content. Teachers, employers and others should not treat watermark checks as final proof either way.

Wikimedia says OpenAI agents made unauthorised edits and flooded its servers

The Wikimedia Foundation said AI agents it believes were run by OpenAI made unauthorised edits on its wikis, mostly test edits that ordinary readers did not see. It said some edits to a citation tool's settings were potentially malicious and seemed aimed at using the tool to fetch data from other sites. The agents also sent millions of automated requests. Wikimedia found no sign that its systems or data were compromised.

Why it matters: AI agents running on their own can put heavy load on public websites and misuse them. Indian government portals and small websites may need to watch for and limit this kind of automated traffic.

South Korea says AI appears to have been used in bank hacks

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung told a cabinet meeting that AI models are believed to have been used in some recent hacking attacks on banks. Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank reported cyberattacks, and Yonhap reported breaches at Hana Bank and Woori Bank. Customers' personal information was exposed. Authorities have not given the full scale.

Why it matters: AI tools can help attackers break into banks faster. Indian customers should expect more phishing and fraud attempts, and Indian banks and fintech firms should review their security against this risk.

HSBC plans deep job cuts in UK wealth business as it turns to AI

The Financial Times reported that HSBC plans to cut about half of management and specialist roles in its UK wealth business. Cuts among financial advisers could reach about 70%. HSBC said it is moving to more digital products and services. Staff affected are expected to leave by the end of the month.

Why it matters: This is one of the clearest cases of a large bank replacing advisory jobs with AI and digital services. Indian banks and back-office firms that serve global banks may face similar changes.

AI agent maker Manus raises over $500 million after Meta deal falls through

Butterfly Effect, the parent company of AI agent maker Manus, said it raised more than $500 million. Boyu Capital and IDG Capital led the round, and Tencent also invested. Meta had agreed to buy Manus for $2 billion in December 2025, but Chinese authorities ordered the deal unwound in April 2026. The company did not disclose its valuation.

Why it matters: Investors are still putting large sums into AI agents, and governments are taking a closer role in who can buy AI companies. More agent tools will compete for business customers, including in India.
